I rather like the idea of this pairing, even though there isn't much basis for it in canon. But in my periodic head cannon I assume they first met while waiting in line for cider, and gradually became an item over the course of seasons two and three. The growth of their relationship took place "off camera," and as a pair they generally don't go in for public displays. It's just not their style.

Then Twilight became a princess, and that's likely to cause some tension. After some difficulty, Twilight essentially tells comet that ultimately "Princess" is only a title, and the wings are just a trapping that go with the title. She's still shy, bookish, clumsy, adorkable Twilight Sparkle. And one thing she *doesn't* want is for a mere title and some flashy accessories to come between them.

Naturally, they work it out.
